What is MUN?
The United Nations is perhaps the backbone of international society, making consistent endeavors to alleviate global problems such as extreme poverty and violation of human rights. Model United Nations is a simulation of the conferences held in international organizations. Most of these conferences are based on committees within the United Nations, as the title Model United Nations suggests.
In Model United Nations, participants will take on roles as representatives of each member nation in the UN or other international organizations, and discuss relevant global or regional issues with other participants through speeches, debates, and negotiations. For participants to be successful in the conference, they will need to do some prior research. With in-depth knowledge of the agenda and their national positions, delegates must be able to conduct full-fledged discussions and formulate resolutions.
Each committee will be distinct from others and will therefore discuss different agenda topics. However, all committees are equal in that the ultimate goal is to come to a consensus on a controversial topic. At the same time, participants representing each country will have to make sure that their national interests and policies are reflected in the agreements.
Through this academic activity, participants can learn and develop important skills that will help them become future global leaders.
'유엔(UN, 국제 연합)'은 국제 사회의 근간을 이루는 국제기구라고 할 수 있습니다. 국제 연합에서는 기아와 인권 유린 등의 국제적인 문제를 해결하기 위해 지속적으로 노력하고 있습니다. 모의 유엔은 이러한 국제기구에서 열리는 회의를 모의로 진행하는 것으로 실제 산하 위원회의 회의들을 기반으로 안건에 대해 토의하고 실제 진행방식을 준수합니다.
모의 유엔 회의에서 참가자들은 유엔 회원국이나 특정 국제기구의 대표 역할을 맡아 연설과 토론, 그리고 협상을 통해 국제적, 지역적인 사안에 대해 논의합니다. 참가자들이 성공적으로 대회를 이끌어나가기 위해서는 각 의제에 대한 사전 조사가 필요합니다. 각 의제에 대한 폭넓은 이해를 바탕으로 참가자들은 생산적인 논의를 하고 효과적인 결의안을 도출해 낼 수 있을 것입니다.
각 위원회는 서로 다른 주제에 대해서 논의하겠지만 참가자들이 논란이 되는 주제에 대해 충분한 논의를 거쳐 각자의 의견을 일치시켜야 한다는 점은 모든 위원회의 회의의 공통 목표입니다. 하지만 참가자들은 의견 조율 과정에서 자신이 대표로 있는 국가나 국제기구의 이익과 정책도 함께 고려해야 한다는 것을 숙지하셔야 합니다.
